- Highline Garden Tour – June 14, 2008
Highline Historical Society presented a visit to our neighborhoods for a day of gardening inspiration.
Inspiration was found in Normandy Park, SeaTac and Burien, where participants visited homes with water features, learned about environmentally-friendly gardening, talked with a Master Gardener, and learned about mulching and composting. A special feature this year was a presentation by the Seattle Post Intelligencer’s Marianne Binetti on creating your own show garden. Marianne writes a syndicated garden column, has authored nine books and appears on HGTV, radio shows and also writes for magazines and the Seattle P-I. She has two new books out this year on “Container Gardening for WA and OR” and “Herb Gardening for WA and OR” and a book on gardening shortcuts called “Easy Answers for Great Gardens”.

- The Seike Garden: An American Story
- The Life and Times of General George E. Pickett, February 6, 2005.
Who was the leader of the charge and why is he important to Washington State? Find out from Pickett himself during The Life and Times of General George Pickett. In a 2-act play, Mike Vouri, as Pickett’s “ghost,” playfully shares his loves, challenges and adventures during his boyhood, his time at West Point, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and his time on San Juan Island. The show, accompanied by live music, reveals the flawed character of a well known but maligned Civil War hero. It gives humorous detail of an international military dispute which took place in Washington Territory; it explores the emotional dichotomy of war from the viewpoint of a mediocre soldier; it provides glimpses into the condition of women and Native Americans of the time; and it provides a personal perspective of the Mexican –American and American Civil wars.
The program is from 1:30 - 3:30 PM at the Burien Community Center at 4th SW and SW 146th Street. Admission is free to Society members, and $7.00 for the public. Admission for groups of 6 or more is $5.00 each.

- Salute to Pioneers - November 7th, 2004.
The Society’s 10th Salute to Pioneers was held at SeaTac City Hall on November 7th. The Society members in attendance were entertained by these former and present “elected's” memories of campaigning and issues of the past 50 years.
Shown in the photo from the Salute to Pioneers (Left to Right) are:
former Superior Court Judge (also 31st District State Representative and King County Councilmember) Ed Heavey; founding Des Moines City Councilmember (1954) William Rudberg; former Normandy Park Community Club President and Normandy Park City Councilmember (1958) Jerrold Peace; and former State Senator (D-31st, 1954) and Administrator of King County Int'l Airport (and head of the PNW Regional FHA) Andy Hess. This Pioneer Panel of early local politicians was moderated by King County Councilwoman Julia Patterson (daughter of a Superior Court Judge, herself a founding SeaTac Councilwoman, former State Representative and Senator).

The Return of Paul Dorpat - September 29th. Seventy-five members representing the Normandy Park Community Club and the Historical Society met on Sept. 29th at the Cove to enjoy an evening with Paul Dorpat. A gifted storyteller, Dorpat gave an engaging presentation of vintage slides in the "Then and Now" format that readers have become accustomed to from his page in each Sunday's Seattle Times.
A particularly attractive feature of this year's presentation was the addition of slides about Burien, Normandy Park and Des Moines. A Dorpat program is always a 'give and take' sort of thing, with him saying, "Who knows what this is?" and audience members answering the questions and discussing local history with one another. All in attendance enjoyed his humor and the large amount of state history that his slides covered. And everyone left having learned a few more interesting facts about the place where we live.

- Sunnydale Elementary School's 100th Birthday -
Sunnydale School's 100th Anniversary was celebrated Saturday, May 22nd, 2004, with a crowd of more than 700 touring their school and participating in a series of commemoration events. The City of Burien opened a sport court for joint community/student use, and speakers told of early years at Sunnydale. The Pioneer farm museum set up a group of displays in the gymnasium for students to sample how things were done many years ago. They could try their hand at grinding grain, work with metal and observe how early students in Highline dressed for school. In the hallway former students could visit classrooms and booths set up by local non-profits, and enjoy a large photo exhibit installed by the Highline Historical Society. More than 30 people signed up to have their early memories of Sunnydale School recorded.
